Transforming Rehabilitation: Effect on Offender Management
Changing Rehabilitation: Effect on Offender Management Changing Restoration will improve the Effectiveness, Governance and Legitimacy of Guilty party Management in England and Wales Presentation The point of this paper is to look at Transforming Rehabilitation as far as its viability, administration and authenticity. Beginning with a clarification of authenticity and presenting The Carter Report 2003 and its proposals. Proceeding onward to clarify a portion of the requirements for an adjustment practically speaking, and an understanding of a portion of the perspectives from probation staff themselves and impression of adversely shrinking endlessly of staff. Significantly, there are some clarification of hypothesis, particularly with respect to desistance and all the more as of late the development of The Good Lives Model, as a continuation of The Risk Needs Responsivity model. The clarification with respect to a portion of the results expected by TR, and the requirement for modernisation. As a feature of TR a Fee for Service and Payment by Results are clarified, with the utilization of diagrams for the peruser. Overseeing hazard is a significant piece of the proposed alters and an adjustment in course to advancing desistance. All-encompassing drivers authenticity and the need to execute change The term administration is an extremely old one, however it has been revived as of late, and has gotten maybe one of the most engaging ideas in sociology, which means another thought changed, related with government and open organization. à Regarding TR, this might be seen by numerous depreciators as an instance of ââ¬Å"new wine in old bottlesâ⬠Chui and Nellis (2003). Administration has been broadly utilized in neighborhood administration. On account of TR, the ubiquity of administration may have something to do with doubt about the legislature. à That stated, The Social Exclusion Unit placed that, proposals from The Carter Report (2003) expressed that in spite of late changes that have brought the administration of the administrations closer together, no forefront association at last claims the objective for decreasing re-affronting. This can prompt holes in the framework, for instance, there is no joint national resettlement system and mediations in jail are regularly not followed up in the network, (Social Exclusion Unit 2002). This thus prompts reevaluation of the conventional speculations of open organization. Self-assurance of customary open organization has been devastated and it has confronted a ââ¬Ëidentity crisis.ââ¬â¢ Public organization, which has should be an integral asset for taking care of social issues, tumbles down to a genuine social issue itself. Subsequently, numerous hypotheses have been proposed as options in contrast to the customary open, Ostrom (1986). The case for an imaginative way to deal with guilty party the board is very obvious, as the past endeavors have been esteemed expensive. It is expressed that in the UK more than à £3bn is gone through consistently on detainment facilities, and nearly à £1bn every year on conveying sentences in the network, MOJ (2013). In spite of this, generally reoffending rates have scarcely changed in the course of the most recent decade and similar countenances are apparently returning back through the framework. Practically 50% all things considered discharged from care in 2010 reoffended inside a year. More than 6000 wrongdoers condemned to short custodial sentences of under a year in the year to June 2012 had recently gotten in excess of 10 network sentences, yet holes in the condemning system mean next to no should be possible to keep them from coming back to wrongdoing once they are discharged go into the network MOJ, (2013). In 2014, under the Transforming Recovery (TR) changes MOJ, (2013), and Probation Trusts were part into the National Probation Service (NPS) which turned out to be a piece of the common help and 21 Community Rehabilitation Companies (CRCs) which were dependent upon marketisation and a business offering process, as observed in Fig.1. with their Contract Package Areas (CPA). à After the offering procedure was finished in 2014, eleven CRCs were claimed by private division organizations driving an association with third area associations, three were joint endeavors between the private, open, and third area, three were an open, private, and third segment organization; two were claimed by the private division solely; and another two were value joint endeavors between the private and third areas (Deering and Feilzer 2015, p.13). Fig.1. CPA Map demonstrating the 21 Contract Package Areas On 29 October 2014, the MoJ declared its liked bidders to run the Community Rehabilitation Companies in these zones. Here are the fruitful bidders and as observed in Fig.2. Sodexo and NACRO have been fruitful in six CRCsInterserve who are driving organizations in five CRCsMTCNovo, a Joint Venture among MTC and various other organisations,â have won London and Thames Valley.Working Links are the favored bidders in three CRCs.The Reducing Reoffending Partnership à is a Joint Venture between Ingeus, St Giles Trust and CRI, who will run the two enormous Midlands CRCs , being Staffs and West Midlands and Derby, Leicester, Nottinghamshire and Rutland). Webster (2017) Fig.2. Demonstrating winning bidders in the Contract Package Areas Plainly the progressions forced in light of TR have had the potentia to influence every one of the three kinds of authenticity, yet maybe especially more so upon self-authenticity. (Robinson, Burke and Millings , 2016) Around half of all wrongdoing is carried out by people who have definitely known by criminal equity framework (CJS). The expense to the citizen of reoffending is assessed to be à £9.5 to à £13 billion every year. There has been minimal positive change in reconviction rates and practically 50% of those discharged from jail go on to reoffend inside a year. The need to diminish reoffending to lessen both the quantity of casualties and the expenses to the citizen. To accomplish this, there is a need to embrace an extreme yet clever criminal equity framework that rebuffs individuals appropriately when they violate the law, yet additionally bolsters them so they donââ¬â¢t carry out wrongdoing later on. (MOJ, 2015) Others are progressively watched in the manner they foresee the eventual fate of TR, and Canton (2011) specifically, stresses the significance of what the probation administration proceeds to speak to and its qualities, for example, confidence in the chance of progress and social consideration. McNeill (2011) describes probation as an equity organization, with key jobs in pushing for probationers corresponding to access to social merchandise that have been denied and interceding between offenders, their networks and social foundations. This perfect view appears differently in relation to the truth of conveying network endorses in a intense corrective atmosphere commanded by open assurance, which is one of Liz Trussââ¬â¢s key needs, with a decrease of viciousness to staff at present running at 40% what's more, a focus on instruction as the third need, particularly English what's more, Maths, MOJ (2017). McNeill additionally contends that it is basic as long as possible authenticity and validity of probation. Right now, it might be unsure with respect to whether a fate ridden or a phoenix-rising vision of the probation future is bound to come to fruition, albeit a few certainties might be assembled from experimental proof accumulated from post trial supervisors and students. à There is by all accounts a lot of good faith on one side of the camp for TR, with respect to how the ongoing changes will be actualized, yet, on the opposite side, a lot of cynicism with respect to the usage of TR. NAPO (National Association of Probation Officers) and UNISON, (Public Area Trade Union), by and large had made their emotions known. The two of them expressed that a vast lion's share of the 17,000 probation staff allude to TR as a ââ¬Å"catalogue of errorsâ⬠as far as staff task, a confound between outstanding task at hand, staffing levels and staff area, bargained chance administration, decreased IT ability with NOMS, nDelius case the executives framework, despite the fact that C-NOMIS as of now had intrinsic issues as observed in fig.3. Expanded organization and a gigantic ascent in the utilization of transitory and sessional staff were esteemed to be the fundamental issues. High performing Probation Trusts have been supplanted with inadequately performing substitutions. (NAPO and UNISON, 2017). The probation staff rushed to bring up that they were not to fault for the blunders. As to utilization of impermanent and sessional staff will help the capacity to be dynamic and adapt to pinnacles and troughs. The utilization of the intentional segment with CRCââ¬â¢s may likewise be a staying point with standard probation staff, despite the fact that as expressed by John Podmore, educator of applied sociologies, ââ¬Å"NOMS was never an association that its representatives gladly pronounced they had a place with. Making a National Prison and Probation Service that individuals try to join and significantly to remain in and create abilities and professions is a critical advance forward. However, it must be considerably more than simply name changeâ⬠, Podmore (2017). Lizz Truss, current Minister of Justice as of April 2017, was quick to advance the recently made Her Majestyââ¬â¢s Prison and Probation Service with the accompanying à bold proclamation, ââ¬Å"The making of HM Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS), will fabricate a world-driving, pro office, committed to professionalizing the jail and probation workforce, upheld by an extra à £100m every year and 2,500 extra jail officials, with a à £1.3 bn financial plan to manufacture new penitentiaries, while simultaneously shutting old and wasteful prisonsâ⬠, Truss (2017). à Wariness might be in the front lines of the vast majority of the staff influenced by the new period unfolding, as past pastors, to be specific Mr Gove and Mr Grayling had to some degree appeared to have à failed in their essential destinations for a transformed and productive signed up organization. Fig.3.Assesemnt of C-NOMIS National Audit Office 2009 The Need for Change Records of the sources of probation and its acknowledgment in hierarchical structure give extraordinary em

Research Question: From 600 C.E. to 1450 C.E., how did the power individual leaders exerted over their lands and people change over time? Annotated Timeline 1. 527 C.E. ââ¬â Reign of the Emperor Justinian over the Byzantine Empire Justinian, also known as ââ¬Å"the sleepless emperorâ⬠by his subjects, was one of the most influential of the early Byzantine emperors. The reign of Justinian was a prodigiously paramount period. It marked the final cessation of the Roman Empire; the establishment of the incipient, Byzantine empire; the commencement of Western Europes unique position within the civilizations of the Old World; and made possible the spread of Islam and the rise of the Franks. He ruled along side his strong-willed wife, andâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The Grand Canal helped to amalgamate both northern and southern China both economically culturally, as well as strengthening the unification of the empire. Sui Yangdi also finished the construction of the Great Wall, which is one of the largest building projects ever undertaken. During his reign, Sui Yangdi also embarked on many military conquests in order to extend his empire. He was able to expand his empire north into Inner Asia and south to present-day Vietnam. His conquests against Japan, though, ended disastrously with the Chinese people rebelling against him , and eventually he was assassinated in 618 C.E. which brought the empire to an end. The fall of the once powerful Sui dynasty after Sui Yangdiââ¬â¢s death further proves how strong, authoritative individuals are pivotal for the perpetuating success and survival of an empire and its peoples. 3. 627 C.E. ââ¬â Reign of Tang Taizong over the Tang Empire Tang Taizong (627-649) was the second Tang emperor and ruled the Tang Empire at its highest point. His empire covered most of the territory of present day China, Mongolia, Central Asia, Vietnam, and Eastern Kazakhstan.

Suggestions Crisis Communicate Development -Myassignmenthelp.Com
Question: Discuss About The Suggestions Crisis Communicate Development? Answer: Introducation Effective communication is essential for business success and it is all about sharing knowledge and information among each other inside and outside of the organisation. It is worth saying that, effective communication goes far beyond simple speech and hearing and for this purpose, body language, word of choice, tone of voice, communication style and message clarification all come into play. These can make the difference between failure and success in interpersonal interactions and transactions. One of the important employability skills is the communication and communication needs to be accurate to make any business process effective. As opined by Adnan et al., (2017), communication is the essence of business management and therefore, all other aspects of management such as planning, staffing, organizing, controlling and directing are solely dependent on the knowledge of effective communication. There are five diagnostic tools that help to identify individuals communication competence and these are non-verbal immediacy, talkaholic scale, willingness to listen, tolerance for disagreement and the other is self-perceived communication competence scale. Non-verbal immediacy Non-verbal communication holds the same importance along with verbal communication in the effective communication skills. As stated by McCroskey et al., (2014), nonverbal behaviour may emphasize verbal communication in the similar way that italicizing emphasizes written communication. In the workplace environment, it is essential for the employees especially for leaders and managers to use different types of body language, poster, hand gesture and facial expression to make the confrontation more attractive and significant. This non-verbal test has near about 26 questions that have to be answered as per the preferred choice. After that, score will be generated and based on this; it becomes possible to understand the effectiveness of that kind of competence. Talkaholic scale Considerable research has determined that, the more an individual talks (unless the person is an incompetent communicator) the more the individual is positively evaluated by others. Such kinds of people are more likely to be a leader as being more competent in respect to other persons perception variables (Hybels, 2014). There are approximately 16 questions that have to be responded and at the end of the test, it becomes possible to understand how much the participant is Talkaholic. Tolerance for disagreement scale Sometime, in the workplace environment, employees need to involve in debates so that; it becomes possible for them to convey their own opinion over some traditional monotonous culture (Shockley-Zalabak, 2014). However, sometimes, staffs need to avoid disagreement so as to reduce workplace conflict (OGallagher, 2015). From this perspective, the tolerance for disagreement scale helps to measure the extent to which an individual can tolerate disagreement of other people. It is a form of Likert scale where individual needs to answer each question as per their belief in order to measure their level of tolerance. Willingness to listen diagnostic tool Listening is another skill of effective communication and with the help of heightened listening skills, both the organisation and the employee can realize the higher level of success. Employees need to listen to the leaders and the managers while receiving information or getting updates on corporate policies (Couldry Hepp, 2013). Hence, an individual can take a test over the willingness to listen diagnostic tool in order to understand their orientation towards listening. Self-perceived communication competency scale (SPCC) Peoples competence of communication varies as per the situation. As mentioned by Berger (2014), employees have to communicate in group meetings along with individual meetings and therefore, it is necessary for the staffs to be able to share their knowledge and information confidently in any situation. Hence, SPCC tool is helpful to identify individual's competence. There are a number of questions in the tool that have to be answered for developing entire understanding about the self-competence. Findings of the tools Based on the aforementioned tools, it becomes helpful for me to understand my communication competence. Hence, I have practiced all the tools and based on these, I get score from each of the tools. Non-verbal immediacy While confronting others, it is essential for me to involve some of the non-verbal communication skills to make the speech listenable. After conducting the test, I score 97 and it shows I am an excellent communicator in case of non-verbal communication. Based on this tool, I get to know that, I like to smile while talk and usually I make eye contact and move my hands to make the confrontation attractive. Talkaholic Talkaholic test helps me to understand whether I prefer to talk to my peers or not. Based on the test, I came to know that, I am not a talkaholic and I scored 18. Therefore, I can add that, I keep quiet when I should talk to others. However, based on the test, I became able to know that, I am not a compulsive talker and therefore, in most of the situations, I remain silent and prefer not to talk too much. Willingness to listen Being an employee, it is important to listen to others in order to develop a collaborative teamwork. Further, it is important to listen to the leaders and the managers in order to get updates over the organisational policies and culture. Therefore, to get employable and be noticeable in the workplace environment, it is necessary to be active listener. Hence, the willingness to listen tool helps me to understand how much potential I have to listen to others. Based on the test, I get a score of 76 that made me know that, I have moderate willingness to listen. However, I do not want to listen to boar presentations and therefore, it makes me sleepy while listening to non-responsive speakers. Tolerance for disagreement scale From the above discussion, I get to know that, discussion is necessary in the workplace environment in order to understand organisational goal and objectives. However, employees need to share their own opinion about the work process and a conflict or disagreement may arise. Sometimes, disagreement becomes fruitful for the company while sometimes, it brings negative growth in the productivity. From this perspective, an employee needs to be engaged in the conflict situations and hence, tolerance for disagreement skill is required. The tolerance for disagreement tool helps me to understand the extent to which I can tolerate situations where people are in disagreement. Hence, I scored 52 which indicate I encompass high level of tolerance for disagreement. Self-perceived Communication Competence Self-perceived communication competence test encompass different characteristics of same people at different situations and therefore, it is essential to calculate each of the factors of the test in order to get clear idea about different essence of same people. Based on the test, I get to know that, there are different factors of characteristics and these are meeting, group, public, Dyad, stranger, friend and acquaintance. I have tested each of the factors and I scored 85 in public and 75 in case meeting. Along with this, I get 83.3, 73.75, 90, 86.25and 90 in case of group, stranger, dyad, acquaintance and friend respectively. In total, I get 83.3 which depict my high self-perceived communication competence. Two communication issues Based on the above test, I get to know my competence level and therefore, I have found two of my communication issues. I have found that, I am not a talkaholic and therefore, most of the time, I keep quiet. Sometimes, this brings a lot of problem and therefore, I need to improve myself so that, I become an effective communicator. This skill is required to maintain a good professional tone. Along with this, for an employee, it is necessary to be communicative because, sharing information is necessary in the workplace to get benefits in terms of promotion and incentives. Moreover, I have found that I am a moderate listener and therefore, I do not like people with misinterpreted body language and who give bore presentations. In the workplace environment, it is necessary to listen to others in order to understand existing work culture and business objective. From this perspective, it can be stated that I need to improve my listening skills in order to get success in the workplace environment. Reflect on two recent professional interactions One of my professional interactions happens in my previous workplace where I was in the sales team and I had to work within a team. In the workplace, leaders used to provide us training about how to handle customers and there I faced the issue of lack of being an active listener. I did not pay much attention to the bore presentations of my peers and leaders and because of this; I was not able to fulfil all the tasks properly that my leaders used to give us to do because of the lack of assertiveness. The leader behaved rudely because of this kind of communication issue and breaking of organisational composure. In another situation of my workplace, I had to handle customers and sales effectively and therefore, I had to make customers understood the qualities of the products. Last month, I had to handle a client who asked me a lot of useless questions about the product and there, I faced the issue of not being talkaholic. Managing people is not so easy and being talkaholic in all kinds of conversations is not always possible. The customer was continuously asking a huge number of questions and I felt incompetent for not being able to answer all the questions. In this particular reflective study, I have identified two of my communication issues that may bring the potential barrier to career life. The theoretical perspective of communication has been introduced in the literature review where I have explained its issues shortly. In order to mitigate the problems, I have developed an action plan for the betterment of my future career. Two communication issues Without effective communication, organisation becomes unable to exchange information with the employees and therefore, it will not be possible for the company to develop communication network for carrying out new product data. Studies show that people that connect and communicate with each other during the business process are more likely to increase productivity. According to the viewpoint of Couldry Hepp (2013), employees need roots in the workplace environment in order to feel a part of the company. The relationship of employees within the workplace helps to grow entire happiness during working hours. From this perspective, a leader needs to be an active talker in order to manage employees and share all information about business objectives and corporate policies. According to the viewpoint of DeVito (2015), effective communication skills are associated with the team working, conflict resolution, critical observation to workforce and adaptability. Sometimes, it is essential for an employee to give a verbal presentation in front of higher authorities and therefore, it is necessary to be an effective communicator to share knowledge in front of them. Therefore, it can be stated that an employee's performa nce is somewhat based on active communication and therefore, it is essential to be able to communicate in any situation to create extra benefits. Active listening skills Listening, one of the skills is highly valued in the workplace environment. Employers hire employees who have the ability to listen and therefore, listening is one of the soft skills that individual requires in order to get employable. Listening is processed in the work content by which an individual becomes able to gain an understanding of the requirements, needs and preferences of stakeholders' thorough indirect or direct interaction (Petersons Khalimzoda, 2016). Sometimes, it becomes essential for the employees to listen carefully to the leaders so that; it becomes helpful for them to understand business objectives carefully (Fussell Kreuz, 2014). Along with this, it is essential for the leaders and managers to be an active listener so as to empower employees. Therefore, it is worth saying that, to be an active listener, it is essential to make eye contact with the speaker so that, it becomes helpful for the speaker to convey the entire message fruitfully. Theoretical understanding of communication Active listening is involved with listening to all senses and interest of the speaker can be shown by using proper non-verbal and verbal messages. Active listening means not focusing only on speakers, the listeners need to listen to perfectly demonstrating appropriate responses. On the other side, public speaking is another issue for people and it is quite common to nervous in front of audiences. Practice and rehearse are needed to be talkaholic. The matter of speech needs to be simplified and preparation is also needed. In order to develop a complete understanding of communication, there are some of the factors that need to be discussed. Mechanistic: This is the systematic process of communication where there is a source who generally sends information to. At another end of the system, there is a receiver who receives the information (Ganguly, 2017). Social In case of social communication, interpersonal communication takes place between sender and receiver. According to the viewpoint of Hybels (2014), content takes the utmost responsibility for the social communication. Psychological In this particular case, interpersonal communication comes into account along with the flow of feelings between source and receiver. Systematic In this kind of mechanistic communication, a number of individuals play a significant role and thereby, the message is prepared by all of the individuals. Each of the participants interprets their emotions and perspective in the communication. Models of communication Schramms model of communication The basic concept of the Schramm's model of communication is that communication is a two-way process. Both the source and the receivers are responsible for this entire process. Source generally creates a message which is then encoded by the encoder (Jensen, 2016). The encoded message needs to be decoded by the decoder where the wave is transformed into the information. The receiver gets the decoded message and the entire communication process takes place. The encoder and the decoder that transform the message are called as a transmitter (McQuail Windahl, 2015). Therefore, the main components of the communication process are the source, encoder, decoder and the receiver. Schramm's model refers that how the message is transferred to a group of people when interpersonal communication takes place. Berlos model of communication is based on Schramms model and therefore, it is the backbone of Berlos model of communication. According to this model, there are some factors that affect the communication process and make the communication process more effective (Knapp, Vangelisti Caughlin, 2014). The four components of the communication include source (S), channel (C), Message (M) and the other factor is all about the receiver (R). The sender sends the message to the receiver through the channel where the message can be distorted by the factor Noise. According to this model, noise is the one that disturbs the message and because of this, the receiver gets distorted information. For this purpose, it is necessary to improve the quality of the channel so that, it becomes possible to get actual message. The message can be in the form of audio, video, text, voice or media. However, Liu Fraustino (2014) argue that the model is a linear model and therefore, Berlo's model does not involve two-way communication process. Theory of interpersonal communication Triandis theory of interpersonal behaviour: Behaviour partly depends on intention and partly on the responsiveness as well. From this perspective, according to the viewpoint of McQuail Windahl (2015), the situational constraint is all about manages behaviour and communication significantly and therefore, it can be stated that, the intention of individuals being influenced by effective elements of social factors and rational deliberation. It is worth saying that, employees need to communicate in the workplace based on the organisational culture and norm. Hence, moral beliefs impact the interpersonal behaviour of individual and therefore, this can influence the similar cognitive limitations and emotional aspects of human beings. As mentioned by Thatcher Evia (2017), it is essential for the employees to maintain certain aspects of behaviour in the workplace and therefore, it is the responsibility of the organisation to maintain all attributes of organisational process so that, it becomes possible for them to maintain staff mora le and cognitive limitations in the workplace environment. It is worth saying that; social factors in the workplace are associated with culture, role and self-concept of the community within which the organisation operates. Along with the social factors, there is another element that impacts the interpersonal behaviour and this is all about the emotional responses. According to the viewpoint of Stead(2013), emotional responses are entirely assisted with the consequences of the effective communication and the rational-instrumental invigilation of the situation. As mentioned by Shockley-Zalabak (2014), in a difficult situation, the decision-making condition is highly influenced by the behavioural attitude of individual and hence, the brain of individuals provides an extent of behavioural reaction in order to find out best possible solutions for the critical situation. In relation to this, attitudes are highly shaped by beliefs about results and evaluation of various outcomes while habits of individuals are mostly affected by the essence of the previous attitude. This section is entirely based on my planning for betterment of communication. Effective communication is essential to having an improved professional career in life. Along with this, it becomes possible for me to do courses on Assertiveness with the help of these crash-courses within 1 month. Jaundice Disease Essay Example
Jaundice Disease Essay The word jaundice is derived from a French word called as jaune, which means yellow. It is a very common condition which is seen in newborn babies which can be treated by exposing them to sunlight. It is also known as yellow skin or eyes disease. It turns your skin, mucous membranes, sclera (the white of your eyes) into a single yellow color. This yellow pigment which is seen on your skin is due to bilirubin which is a byproduct of old red blood cells. If you are affected by jaundice consider it to be a serious problem which cannot to be taken lightly. Nearly 1% red blood cells retire everyday and those are replaced by fresh blood cells. These old blood cells are processed in the liver and later disposed. If there happens to be too many old red blood cells the yellow pigment builds up in the body, which results in the first stages of jaundice. Even though jaundice is not a disease but it is a sign for many other diseases. Jaundice is very common among babies due to the immature functioning of the liver. It is not equipped to deal with the removal of bilirubin from the bloodstream. Jaundice occurs mainly due to liver failure but there are many other reasons by which it is affected. Bilirubin is a natural product arising from the normal breakdown of red blood cells in the body and is excreted in the bile, through the actions of the liver. Jaundice is most often the result of a disorder affecting the liver it can be caused by a variety of other conditions affecting for example the blood or spleen. It should be thoroughly investigated so that the underlying cause can be identified and treated. At the end of their life they are broken down and removed from the circulation by special cells called phagocytes, which are found within the bone marrow, spleen and liver. New red cells are of course continually manufactured and this also takes place within the bone marrow. Following breakdown of the red cells some of their component parts such as amino acids and iron can be re-used by the body. Other components such as bilirubin need to be removed. Knowing how this removal pathway works is the key to understanding how jaundice occurs. Most waste products of the body are excreted in the urine via the kidneys but the liver and bile system is the other main physical route out of the body for these substances. By waste products we mean the many compounds that arise in the course of the bodys metabolism but almost all forms of drugs must also be eliminated either via the urine or bile routes. In the case of bilirubin released from old red cells, it passes through the bloodstream to the liver, where the liver cells process it. These cells carry out many complex chemical functions and also produce the liquid bile, which is the vehicle by which the cells discharge their output to the bile duct system. This is a branching network of tiny tubes throughout the liver, which merge in the same way as the branches of a tree. Ultimately a single main bile duct comes out of the liver and joins the first part of the small intestine (duodenum). Bile (and therefore bilirubin) then passes out through the small and large intestines and is excreted in the stool (feces). Bile is green in colour, but bacteria in the large bowel act to change the bilirubin to substances that are brown, which gives stool its characteristic colour. Some of the bilirubin is reabsorbed back into the body through the bowel wall, eventually appearing in the urine as a substance called urobilinogen (although the typical yellow/orange colour of urine is in fact due a different pigment called urochrome). Therefore, any failure of the bilirubin removal pathway will lead to a build-up of bilirubin in the blood. When this happens the individuals skin turns yellow, causing jaundice. There are many conditions that could be associated with jaundice, such as: An excessive breakdown of red blood cells The balance between manufacture and breakdown of red cells is normally precisely balanced and equal but there are several conditions in which the rate of breakdown increases. If the amount of bilirubin thus released exceeds the livers capacity to remove it, then jaundice will develop. The medical term for excessive red cell breakdown is haemolysis, and within the developed world it is a fairly rare condition. Malaria is however a major cause in tropical climates as the malaria parasites live within the red cells and shorten their life. Similarly the condition in which a foetus develops haemolysis due to incompatibility of its Rhesus blood group with that of its mother is now rarely seen in the UK where we routinely check for Rhesus antibodies in the mothers blood. In parts of the world where antenatal care is not as good haemolytic disease of the newborn is much more common. A temporary jaundice of newborn babies is however quite common, due to the relative immaturity of the babys liver cells and the higher than normal rate of cell breakdown that occurs in the first few weeks of life. It improves rapidly without treatment although when too high it can be speeded up by exposing the baby to ultraviolet light. Jaundice of the newborn is commoner in premature babies as their liver is even more immature than a baby born at term. Autoimmune haemolytic anaemia is a rare disease in which the bodys immune system seems to attack the red cells. It usually affects adults. Haemolysis can also be a side effect of some drugs, eg dapsone. Impairment of liver cell function The commonest cause is a viral infection of the liver cells (hepatitis). Many different types of infection including glandular fever (mononucleosis) can also be responsible for this. Alcohol abuse and subsequent scarring of the liver (cirrhosis) can cause significant cell damage leading to jaundice. Other less common conditions causing liver cell damage include haemochromatosis, alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency and primary biliary cirrhosis. Tumours of the liver either primary liver cancers (arising from the liver tissue itself) or more commonly, the secondary spread of a tumour from elsewhere in the body into the liver can lead to cell failure and jaundice. Blockage of the bile ducts This can occur as a result of abnormality inside or outside the ducts. The commonest example of an internal blockage is a gallstone. Tumours of the bile duct are rare but if large enough, or situated just where the bile duct meets the duodenum, then they can block the flow of bile. At this junction point, known as the ampulla of Vater, the tube from the pancreas gland also joins to the duodenum. Cancer of the pancreas tends to arise in the part of the pancreas nearest to the ampulla of Vater, so is another potential cause of obstructive jaundice. Any external organ or mass lying nearby that becomes large enough to press on the bile duct could be responsible. Examples include swollen internal lymph glands, a cyst (perhaps of the pancreas) or scar tissue following a previous infection or surgery. Symptoms of Jaundice, other than that of the jaundice itself, will relate to the underlying cause. For example someone with haemolysis might also be anaemic and tired. If a gallstone were responsible there would probably have been a preceding history of pain in the abdomen. A cancer might be accompanied by weight loss, and so on. When jaundice is due to obstruction of the bile duct the person will often notice that their urine becomes dark and stools become pale, as the excess bilirubin spills over into the urine and no longer colours the stool. Obstructive jaundice is also often accompanied by intense itching. The diagnosis is made by recognition of the patients appearance and accompanying symptoms. A blood test will confirm the raised bilirubin level and other tests such as those for hepatitis and haemolysis are also done on the blood. Ultrasound is a good way to inspect the liver and bile ducts for signs of obstruction, and often can give useful information on the pancreas gland. CT scanning also helps diagnose obstructive jaundice accurately. Treatment will depend upon the diagnosis behind the symptom of jaundice. For example, if the problem is one of gallstones, then removal of the gallbladder may be required. Jaundice comes in several other types, I will elaborate briefly about some of those types as follows: Neonatal jaundice is usually harmless: this condition is often seen in infants around the second day after birth, lasting until day 8 in normal births, or to around day 14 in premature births. Serum bilirubin normally drops to a low level without any intervention required: the jaundice is presumably a consequence of metabolic and physiological adjustments after birth. In extreme cases, a brain-damaging condition known as kernicterus can occur; there are concerns that this condition has been rising in recent years due to inadequate detection and treatment of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia. Neonatal jaundice is a risk factor for hearing loss. Jaundiced eye, It was once believed persons suffering from the medical condition jaundice saw everything as yellow. By extension, the jaundiced eye came to mean a prejudiced view, usually rather negative or critical. Alexander Pope, in An Essay on Criticism (1711), wrote: All seems infected that the infected spy, As all looks yellow to the jaundiced eye. Similarly in the mid 19th century the English poet Lord Alfred Tennyson wrote in the poem Locksley Hall: So I triumphed ere my passion sweeping thro me left me dry, left me with the palsied heart, and left me with a jaundiced eye. In conclusion, if you or one of your friends or relatives suspect that you may have jaundice, it is essential that you arrange to see your doctor in order that the underlying cause is identified and any possible treatment initiated as soon as possible.

Free Essays on Product Of Society
In todayââ¬â¢s society, short and often simple sayings are exhibited freely and boldly in order to pronounce an individualââ¬â¢s firm opinion. The ever so common comedic bumper stickers have been widely replaced by slogans reflecting strong views or status. Individuality, endless opportunity, and independence have sparked a variety of new slogans into the picture. Progressing controversial issues such as abortion and feminism clutter the backs of cars with arguments like, ââ¬Å"Pro-family and Pro-choiceâ⬠and ââ¬Å"A woman with out a man is like a fish without a bicycle.â⬠Materialistic values are often exploited with sayings such as ââ¬Å"Whoever dies with the most toys, wins.â⬠These overwhelming and rigid statements are products of the time and will enhance already determined beliefs or will remain fruitless for disbelievers. During the most recent years abortion has plagued our country with a substantial amount of arguments from both pro-choice and pro-life activists. Abortion being the most debatable argument has several opposing views, which disagree with a motherââ¬â¢s right to choose. The catchphrase claiming ââ¬Å"Pro-family and Pro-choiceâ⬠has a different standpoint on abortion. Pro-family gives a conservative aspect, which favors abortion as the right choice to promote healthy family life under certain circumstances. Although it does not promote abortion it gives the unprepared mother an alternative. In some conditions choosing birth may be a dysfunctional, irresponsible, and even a cruel descion. Unprepared situations such as rape, insecest, and age of mother may encourage a decision such as abortion. Acknowledging that single parent homes are not always the most ideal situations it promotes a substitute to giving birth and supports middle class family values instead of forcing a n unwanted child into an unjust situation. Responsibility, stability, and values are needed to exist in order to have a model home for a child. ... SC2034C Interpreting crime and criminals prt 2 Essay
SC2034C Interpreting crime and criminals prt 2 - Essay Example that is in urgent need of overhaul. Apart from qualitative data derived from MET sources, a questionnaire (through telephonic interview) (See Appendix I) tackles the full extant of areas in which the system should harmonise itself, to understand the complexities of juvenile crime. 1.1 Research problem: Understanding the individual and social phenomena comprising juvenile delinquency (youth crime), the causes and consequences thereof and remedial measures to this effect. 1.2 Rationale for research: Criminology is a multidisciplinary study that performs an exploratory analysis of facts that are closely related to the research information for a particular case study. My main purpose of choosing ââ¬Ëjuvenile delinquencyââ¬â¢ as a focus topic, was to investigate special findings that have often been neglected in the past. Juvenile crime comprised 17% of all crime in the UK in recent years (MET Info on Juvenile Stats, 2007) and scratching the surface, yielded more reliable data for further understanding of the issues at hand. Poverty and crime are interlinked chapters. 1.3 Research importance: The subject of juvenile crime has gained national media attention in recent years, ever since the Stephen Lawrence murder case; the main reason being due to the gradual tendency of such individuals to become sociopaths in the longer run (McCord & Spatz Widom, 2001); disaffected by society and indifferent to the ethics and moral values contained therein; the importance of this topic can be gauged from the fact that much less research material is available as of today (Singer, 1997), and there is a far, bigger need to understand the problem in totality. Investigators have arrived at

The Worlds Thirst Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
The Worlds Thirst - Essay Example Doing this entails the use of different means, namely, the ethos, logos, and pathos. However, new products have no established credibility, thus they cannot rely on ethos unless they would convince a well-known personality such as Pres. Barack Obama or Sec. Hillary Clinton to endorse the new product. Therefore, they would attract the attention of the consumers, making use of either logos or pathos or both. Noting the serious problem of death in Africa, ââ¬Å"Lmnâ⬠captivates the audience by appealing first to their logos. The setting of the advertisement is a perfect choice. It denotes the remarkable dearth of potable water all over the world, especially in Africa. In the opening scene, the sight of two African men under the blazing safari sun instantly suggests what the commercial is all about, the answer to the need for water or drink. Anyone who would see the advertisement will surely be reminded of the problem that haunts not only Africa but even other parts of the world. The lack of water as shown in the scenes challenges the audience to think of an alternative way to quench thirst but the setting itself limits the choice and leads them back to the setting. The last part of the segment where the Lmn drink appears connotes that one can find Lmn even in the most difficult place such as Africa. That part also suggests the global presence of the manufacturer. The use of logos is also effective in relaying the message that one does not have to do much effort in finding a drink. The technique used was quite ordinary, thus making the point clear. First, it gives propositions then leads to a sound conclusion at the end. In the first part of each commercial segment, the two characters look terribly thirsty. Then, they would attempt to look for a drink and find a way but still fail at the end despite serious troubles.Ã

Measurements of physical characteristics Essay Example for Free
Measurements of physical characteristics Essay Measurements of physical characteristics are used widely in everyday human life, whether in household or industrial processes, in service or in scientific researches. Some of the main categories of regularly measured parameters are weight, length, area, volume, temperature, density, concentration, voltage, amperage and power. Measurement units historically differed from nation to nation, but over time there is a straight tendency for unification of units. Metric system is recognized as universal in ever-growing number of countries and this allows to minimize differences and errors in international scientific, trade and other types of communications. In metric system, meter, its multiples and fractionals are used for the measurements of length, square meter and its derivates are for measurements of area, cubic meter ââ¬â for measurements of volume. For measuring temperature there are Celsius or Fahrenheit degrees used, for measuring density ââ¬â kilogram per cubic meter. Voltage in international metric system is measured in volts, amperage ââ¬â in amperes, and watts are used for measuring power. To perform measurements one needs to have appropriate instruments. These instruments should have accuracy grade acceptable for the type and purpose of measurements that will be performed. When measurement of length is performed, the only kind of instruments needed is tape-measure or straight scale, if size of measured object is relatively small. If distance that has to be measured is large, and surface between starting and finishing points is not smooth, more sophisticated instruments will be needed to perform required measurements. Measurements of area and volume will sometimes require certain calculations in addition to direct measurements. If measurement of an area of regular shape is performed, it is enough to measure length of the sides of that area and then apply relatively simple formulas for calculation of that area. But if the area measured has irregular shape with edges of bizarre form, calculations will be far more complex and may require solution of integral equations to determine approximate size of an area in question. When it is necessary to measure volume of a liquid, volumetric glassware is enough. But when the volume of a body with complex form shall be calculated, procedure of measurement may become much more complicated. If the body with unknown volume is available for direct measurement, it may be submerged into the water or any other liquid and volume of displaced liquid that is equal to the volume of that body, could be measured. But if that body is not available for direct measurement and is given in form of a scheme with known parameters measured or set beforehand, then rather complicated calculations may be required to estimate the volume of a said body. Density of a liquid may be measured using special instrument called densitometer, which is based on displacement of a certain amount of liquid by the weight of the instrument. The higher density of examined liquid, the smaller will be volume of liquid displaced. For estimation of the density of gases or solid bodies another methods shall be applied, because displacement-based densitometry cannot be applied to non-liquid substances. Measurements of mass and volume are usually performed, and density then is calculated using the simple formula of mass divided by volume. Temperature can be measured using thermometers of different types ââ¬â liquid-filled, electric, etc. Electric parameters like amperage, voltage and power, could be measured either directly using specific measuring devices, or indirectly by measuring related parameters and later calculating values of parameters required. For a list of physical parameters there are specific units in the system of measurements. Some of the examples were given above. For another example, unit for measuring force is newton, and unit for pressure is pascal. Certain parameters can be formulated indirectly through other units. Speed, for example, is defined as unit of distance passed per unit of time, and acceleration ââ¬â as rate of change of speed per unit of time. Consequently, force that influences a body, may be calculated through known mass of the body, its beginning speed and rate of change of its speed under the influence of the force studied. Unfortunately, measurements can never provide us with absolute values of parameter we are interested in. Due to imperfection of both human perception, instruments for measurements and because of influence of unstable environmental conditions upon the instrument, body that is subjected to measurements and the person performing measurements, some imprecision will always be present. Additionally, when performing measurements, observer sometimes has to use estimated data because more or less precious values can not be obtained under current conditions. Or maybe high precision values of a given parameter are not important for the current task. Either way, estimation of measured data sometimes takes place, as well as certain ever-present

Oreo Cookie and Six Flags Commercials - Nostalgia for Sale :: Media Advertising Essays
Oreo Cookie and Six Flags Commercials - Nostalgia for Sale Many television commercials choose to feature a contrast between youth and maturity as their subject. An ââ¬Å"Oreo Cookieâ⬠commercial, for example, features a little girl who is about four years old mimicking her grandfatherââ¬â¢s actions in eating a cookie. Another commercial advertises the popular theme park, Six Flags Great Adventure. This commercial, entitled ââ¬Å"The Six Flags Dancing Man,â⬠features an elderly man dancing like an enthusiastic child. This relates to Stephen Kingââ¬â¢s idea in ââ¬Å"My Creature from the Black Lagoon,â⬠that adults long for and are often reminded of their childhood. Meanwhile, Rita Doveââ¬â¢s essay, ââ¬Å"Loose Ends,â⬠and Marie Winnââ¬â¢s essay, ââ¬Å"Television Addiction,â⬠each presents the great influence television has on life, often because of televisionââ¬â¢s great aspect of reality. Together, these ideas support the reasoning behind an advertisementââ¬â¢s attempt to sell abstract id eas. By using youth and old age in commercials, advertisers can sell nostalgia as a way of making commercials more memorable. Nabisco, the company that produces Oreo Cookies, has always been known for outstanding commercials. Yet this ââ¬Å"Oreo Cookieâ⬠commercial is perhaps the most remarkable. First, she twists the cookie apart and then, this cute little girl with her hair in pigtails proceeds to dunk the cookie in a tall glass of milk, submerging her entire hand. The camera then shifts to show the childââ¬â¢s grandfather eating the cookie in the same manner. This advertisement aims at leading audiences to reminisce of the simple pleasures of their childhood, like enjoying a cookie. While doing so, the advertisers have created a memorable commercial. Also, in ââ¬Å"The Six Flags Dancing Manâ⬠commercial, family members are sitting on the front porch of their home, trying to arrange a day to spend at Six Flags Great Adventure. Because of their busy schedules, the attempt seems impossible. Suddenly, a red school bus pulls up and a very old man hobbles off, dressed in a black tuxedo and a red bow tie. Then, upbeat music begins to play and the man begins dancing wildly, inviting the family aboard the bus to go to Six Flags Great Adventure. The family happily joins the old man and the bus pulls away.
